GenTraveling – from county seats to state and nation capitals

Hello GenTravelers!

We all realize we don’t have to travel half-way across the globe to GenTravel, right?!?  A quick trip to the county seat of where an ancestor lived could potentially contribute to a successfully research project.  And hey!  Why not take advantage of the records you’ve already helped pay for?

In an article in the Spring 2005 (Vol 17, Number 1) FGS Forum publication, author Curt Witcher explains that the…

“United States federal government is the largest publisher in the world”.

“Government documents at all level[s] can be rich sources of data for those seeking more information about their families and ancestors.”

“the fact that our tax dollars have gone to compile and publish this data should entice many to use these documents”

Curt Witcher went into more detail about the government’s publication of Serial Sets and the value it has to genealogists.  You’ll want to go back and read the article or ask your librarian about gaining access to that series.
